| Women Candidates in Council Elections: | |||||||||||
| Measures of Success, 1993 - 2007 | |||||||||||
| Women have never fared well in becoming candidates in Maltese elections, particularly in elections to | |||||||||||
| the national legislature. In the local Council elections their participation and their successes have | |||||||||||
| consistently been higher than at the General Elections. Table 1 shows a fairly steady pattern in | |||||||||||
| their share of candidacies and of seats won. | |||||||||||

| Looking at the relative success of male and female candidates, the former have usually been more | |||||||||||
| successful in making their candidacies winning ones, as Table 2 demonstrates. However, their | |||||||||||
| success rate has been only marginally better than that of the female candidates. | |||||||||||

| There are some differences in regard to the party affiliation of women candidates. For one, | |||||||||||
| female PN candidates have outnumbered candidates of other parties and groups in each | |||||||||||
| round of elections. | |||||||||||
| Yet, with the exception of the 3rd round, they have been less successful in making their | |||||||||||
| candidacies winning one. | |||||||||||
