A Pattern of Stability:
Changes in the Parties' Number of Seats, by District, 1976 - 2008

Since 1976 all Maltese elections have essentially become competitions between only two political parties, the Nationalists (PN) and the Labour Party (MLP).

Their voter support has remained fairly evenly split between them over the years, both nationally and regionally. The result has been a remarkable stability in the number of seats they have been able to win in each of Malta's thirteen electoral districts.

While there were 91 possible occasions where the number of a party's seats in a district could have changed from the previous election, such a change happened in only 8 instances. Interestingly, all of these shifts occurred in just four of the electoral districts (the 1st, 2nd, 7th and 10th).

The Tables below show the number of seats which each party obtained in the district. Changes from the preceding election are highlighted in yellow.
