| One-Time-Only
Candidates for Council Office |
| In
the first round of council elections there were some 900 candidates. Of
these, |
| more
than half (505) did not contest the next or any further elections. This is |
| perhaps
unsurprising for those who lost in their first attempt at election: 356 of |
| them.
But it is noteworthy that 149 winners in the first round also chose not |
| to
contest a second time. Some perhaps because of illness or death; others |
| possibly
because of disenchantment. |
| Since
the first round of elections, there has been a remarkable and constant |
| decline
in the number and percentages of candidates who failed to return |
| for
a second try at council office. |
