Elsewhere on this site, local election data are focused on the results in particular years and in particular towns and villages. In this section, by contrast, results are presented more comprehensively, covering elections in all localities and over the span of a decade.
Please note some peculiarities in this section:
"Groups:" References to "groups" are to local associations that presented candidates for election, such as the La Stella Levantina Band Club or the Fgura United Football Club. (For a complete list of these groups, click here.)"Rounds:" Much of the information presented in this section is reported by "rounds" of elections. All Maltese localities are divided into three groups and each such group will hold elections every third year. The terms for the three groups are staggered. When all three groups have finished with their electoral cycle, a "round" is completed. So far, four complete rounds have occurred. The details of the arrangement for staggered elections, and the years which comprise each round, can be found at the bottom of this page.
Exceptional Cases: On a number of occasions there was no competitive election in some localities because the number of candidates equaled the number of available council seats. In 1999 there was an extra election in Paola to elect an interim council after the earlier one was dissolved. A local council for Mtarfa was created after the second round of elections and in four localities the number of council seats was increased in the course of time. All such instances are noted and accomodated in the respective files.
Membership Changes: The results of casual elections and co-optations, as a consequence of deaths or resignations of council members, are not included in any of the files here. The same applies to changes in the office of Mayor.
